There are 3,500 species in the world. About 175 of those are in North America. We have 35-85 in our area of Alabama.
Alabama has about 60 species: Anopheles, Culex, Aedes (Asian). The majority of these don’t bite people, but typically feed on birds and such.
Asian Tiger Mosquito
These mosquitoes lay their eggs all over the yard. The eggs are drying resistant; the egg can sit for a year or more dormant. This species only flies and feeds during the day. Only flies about 100 feet from home. Floor fans to help to keep them away since they fly so low.
Southern House Mosquito
The female flies at night to find water to deposit her eggs. She will look for any standing or stagnant water to lay them. The larvae will then feed on any organic material that is in the water before they take flight.
