Mosquitoes

There are 3,500 species in the world.  About 175 of those are in North America.  We have 35-85 in our area of Alabama.

Alabama has about 60 species:  Anopheles, Culex, Aedes (Asian).  The majority of these don’t bite people, but typically feed on birds and such.

But then there are these…
Asian Tiger Mosquito (Aedes albopictus)

These mosquitoes lay their eggs all over the yard.  The eggs are drying resistant; the egg can sit for a year or more dormant. This species only flies and feeds during the day.  Only flies about 100 feet from home.  Floor fans to help to keep them away since they fly so low.

These are medium-sized, brown mosquitoes that are most predominate in domestic environments.  Hence, earnings its name Southern House Mosquito.  This species is known for caring viruses such as West Nile, Zika, and Western Equine Encephalitis.
